NRCHA Crowns Open Hackamore World Champion

When the team of Hickory Holly Time and Kelby Phillips reunited in Fort Worth for Open Hackamore finals action, the result produced pure magic. The DT Horses, LLC, owned stallion by One Time Pepto out of Hickorys Holly Cee put a stellar 224.5 reining score on the board, followed by an impressive score of 220.5 on the cow for a cumulative score of 445 points worth $8,687.

Recently purchased by Dean Tuftin of Oregon, Hickory Holly Time stands at Oswood Stallion Station in Weatherford, and Phillips picked him up just a week and half ago.

"I actually didn't even realize that he was qualified because I didn't take him to any hackamore shows besides Reno, but I was fourth on him at the AQHA World Show, and they said that qualified him so Dean said I better go show him," said Phillips, adding that the stallion didn't miss a beat.

"As soon as I got him back, he was good," said Phillips. "Today, as soon as I walked in he felt like he was just on. I think maybe because it's easy for him, he just stays so pure all the time. I felt like I could ask him for as much as I wanted to and he was going to be good. He circled great and he's one of the biggest stopping horses I've ever seen. As long as I do my job and run him down there I know he's going to be good. He drug his butt and his right turnaround was probably the best I've ever gotten him turned around."

Crediting a host of friends and family for their support, Phillips expressed his appreciation to Hickory Holly Time's owners Dean and Leslie Tuftin. He also thanked Don and Nelle Murphy, as well as Hayden Upton, all of whom opened up their facilities so Phillips could ride and prepare prior to the show. He thanked is wife Abbie for everything she does to keep his program running successfully, his family, his sisters for watching and supporting him, and finally Dr. Joe Carter and the crew at Oklahoma Equine for keeping his horse in top shape.

Phillips was awarded a Bob's Custom Saddle from the NRCHA, a Gist custom buckle donated by Smart Boons/Eric and Wendy Dunn, Rios stock cowboy boots from Rios of Mercedes Boots, a commemorative world finals jacket from Holy Cow Performance Horses and Shady Lil Starlight, a C.R. Morrison Bronze sponsored by Paul and Amy Bailey, Joey Jemison spur straps, Platinum Performance, a mug and a $50 gift certificate sponsored by Santa Cruz Animal Health.

The Reserve Champion in the Open Hackamore division went to Keith Vogel riding Coloradoboonsmal (Peptoboonsmal x Miss Playboys Josie) to a score of 441 (217 rein/ 224 cow) for owner Conrad Swanson. Vogel won a Gist trophy buckle donated by Smart Boons/Eric and Wendy Dunn, Rios of Mercedes Boots, a notebook donated by Classic Equine and a commemorative NRCHA World Finals jacket sponsored by Holy Cow Performance Horses and Shady Lil Starlight.
