All’s fair in love and war. That was made clear at the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Snaffle Bit Futurity Sales, where DT Mr Catsanova caught the eye of several prospective owners.
Those hopefuls battled it out in the bidding as the money on the tote board steadily rose. It stopped at $77,000 with a final bid from buyer Mark Cross. The black yearling colt finished as the highest seller of the two-day Western Bloodstock-managed sale, held Oct. 18-19.
DT Mr Catsanova was consigned in Fort Worth, Texas, by DT Horses LLC. He is by Dean Tuftin’s talented stallion Hickory Holly Time (One Time Pepto x Hickorys Holly Cee x Doc’s Hickory), an earner of $231,000-plus.
The colt is out of standout broodmare Cat Mist, a daughter of High Brow Cat and Little Mist Smart (by Smart Little Lena) with lifetime cutting earnings of $70,199 recorded in Equi-Stat. Cat Mist is an $838,000-plus producer with offspring performing in cutting and reined cow horse. Her leading offspring is 2018 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Champion SJR Diamond Mist (by CD Diamond).
The second-highest seller overall and the highest-selling broodmare was Hip No. 2012, Tazs Dreamgirl. Brought to Fort Worth by consignor Kathleen Moore, the 2007 bay mare brought a final bid of $75,000 from buyer Robert Simpson.
Tazs Dreamgirl, who was in foal to 2015 National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity Open Champion Stevie Rey Von, garnered more than $106,000 during her time as a show horse. Ridden by Lloyd Cox, she finished fifth in the NCHA Futurity Open and continued to find success in cutting pens. The dam of nine foals — the oldest of which were born in 2015 — has two money-earners listed on her Equi-Stat record.
Hip No. 2035, Cats Nu Shine, rounded out the top three sellers when the hammer fell at $65,000. Clint Marshall signed the ticket on the flashy Wagonhound Land & Livestock-consigned yearling filly.
By Equi-Stat Elite $12 Million Sire WR This Cats Smart, Cat Nu Shine is out of one of Shining Spark’s leading daughters, Shiney Nu Annie ($104,961). She is a half-sister to Annies One Time, who carried trainer Nick Dowers to third in this year’s NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open just hours after Marshall’s purchase. The finish pushed Shiney Nu Annie’s produce earnings to more than $73,000.
Cat Nu Shine’s second dam is the great Annies Nu Lena. The daughter of Nu Cash was an Open finalist at the 1998 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity and a Non-Pro finalist at the 2000 National Reining Horse Association Derby. More notably, though, she has gone on to produce 16 money-earners. Among her leading offspring are: Shiney Nu Annie; Shiney And Nu ($58,524); Guapo Lena ($43,897); and Smart Nu Shiner ($43,520).
